Hello my lovely readers 🙂 How’s everything going?
Today I want to share with you the second part of my trip to Germany. I spend three days in Aachen, which is in the border between Germany, Belgium and Holland. Aachen is a city full of students, I actually went there because a friend of mine was studying at its university.
The first thing I visited was Aachen’s catedral. It is claimed as one of the oldest cathedrals in Europe. It was constructed by order of the emperor Charlemagne, because Aachen was the capital of the Carolingian Empire. Charlemagne is buried in this cathedral.
When I came into the cathedral I wasn’t expecting how beautiful it was inside. The walls and ceilings are decorated with beautiful mosaic tiles in golden, red and blue colours. I can honestly say it’s the most beautiful cathedral I’ve ever seen.
Aachen is also a really beautiful city full with small colourful early 20th-century Gründerzeit houses.
I’d also love to highlight Aachen’s beautiful town hall. It has a Gothic style and it looks like a palace.
There are over 30 thermal springs in Aachen, the Elisenbrunnen it’s a neo-classical hall covering one of the city’s famous thermal fountains.
Aachen developed from a Roman settlement and spa, that’s why you can still find an archaeological showcase of ruins from the roman period.
The Ponttor is one of the two remaining gates of the original city wall of Aachen, it was built in the 14th century. It’s actually quite impressive how well it’s preserved.
Another thing that I loved about Aachen is that since it’s full of students there’s a great night life and the prices of the restaurants are super affordable.
Have you ver been to Aachen? What’s your favourite cathedral?
¿Has estado en Aachen? ¿Cuál es tu catedral favorita?
